Yard work

April 25th, 2009

Today is an absolutely gorgeous day. The temperature is around 80 degrees and there is a nice breeze blowing to dry up the sweat.

We spent the morning working in the yard. The fence row between us and the neighbors is an overgrown mess. Grapevine and poison ivy vines are running rampant. There are berry canes (we won’t know what kind until later, but I think they’re probably raspberries) growing helter skelter. There are several wild rose bushes that have gotten completely out of control. Not to mention all the trash that has been thrown in it over time. We started in at the street side and began picking up trash and cutting vines. We ended up hauling 3 trailers of dead wood/cut saplings to the back to cut up for firewood or burn in the fire pit. Cut all of the roses back so they can grow better. Culled the berry canes leaving just the strongest ones.

We went shopping last night and I found my Mary statue for my garden I’ve been looking for. We also picked up three dwarf Korean lilac bushes. One was planted behind the new statue for a backdrop. The other two were put on the garage side. Since these won’t get very big they will be very nice.

We also planted the remaining 8 roses that had been sitting in the garage. And now that brings the total of roses we’ve planted to around 30 or so. As soon as I can figure out where to put some more I’ll probably get some more Tongue out.

And now, after getting showered and clean, it’s time to go out to eat. We have neither of us had anything since breakfast and this kind of yard work builds up an appetite.

Egg update

April 24th, 2009

At one point, there were four eggs in the “nest” in front of the house. We looked last night, however, and all of the eggs are gone. Not broken, just gone. I don’t know if a snake got them or if the guy next door who “owns” the ducks realized they were nesting here and got them or what. So no little fuzzy ducks will be wandering through the flowerbed later this spring.

New addition

April 19th, 2009

We were mowing the grass yesterday and checking out the status of some of the bulbs we’ve planted and discovered we have guests. In one of my flower beds, very close to the house, we discovered a “nest” with a single egg in it. It’s more of a hole scraped in the ground than a regular nest. But the egg was on the small side so we couldn’t figure out what laid it.

Bryan was out last night doing something in the yard just before dark and here came Mr. and Mrs. Mallard who promptly plopped down on the nest! We checked it this morning and found they have added a second egg. I’m going to continue sneaking out there and hope to catch them so I can get a picture.

Spring is great!!
